Lame

Senatorial aspirant Jamby Madrigal’s lawyer did not choke on his words when he insisted that it was the candidate’s volunteers who are responsible for the social media “contest” that promised to give away iPads as prizes. In fact he seemed only slightly abashed.

It all began with a tweet from Ms. Madrigal’s twitter account @TheRealJamby saying, “Speak your mind about corruption and win an iPad.” A counterpart post on it also appeared on her Facebook. This give-away promo caught the attention of the Commission on Elections and now it has announced that a preliminary investigation is to be conducted to determine if such a “contest” constitutes illegal campaigning. The ensuing publicity compelled Ms. Madrigal to apologize and for her lawyer to articulate that she was not the one responsible for the tweets or Facebook posts.

How disturbing.

The former senator certainly is not lacking in legal representation. She is ably assisted by advisers and her campaign sufficiently funds enough staff to organize and plan every step. It seems unlikely that a team of “young volunteers” who allegedly run the social media campaign would volunteer an expensive gadget (are they as rich as the senatorial aspirant in question?). Nor does it seem likely that they would jeopardize Madrigal by making empty promises (only politicians are supposed to do that, di ba?).

But what disturbs us the most is the willingness of Ms. Madrigal to sacrifice the most helpless and lowly members of her team to save her skin. And while it may be too much to expect her to fall on her sword, a graceful admission of wrong would have been in order. It certainly would have made her look like the better woman, instead it has revealed a mindset that some people may be and are expendable.
